Sails against the sky
Sunrise, sunset, mist or a dramatic sky: the weather decides how a windmill looks. I wait for the sails to stand clear against the light.
Two countries, two traditions
Dutch mills often work together with water, German mills with the open countryside. Both are part of the local history I like to record.

Mondriaan Molen – Abcoude – Netherlands
Original name was Oostzijdse Molen. However the famous painter Piet Mondriaan captured this mill more than 20 times. Hence it now bears his name.
Spengense Molen – Kockengen – Netherlands
Pumping mill built in 1841 and in operation until 1962. Nowadays occasionally in use.
Mill “De Vlijt” – Meppel – Netherlands
Firing sunset. The cornmill “De Vlijt” dates from 1858. It was demolished before the 2nd World War. The mill has been rebuilt completely from 2002 onwards. So actually it’s a new, modern mill.
Mill Tweemanspolder – Zevenhuizen – Netherland
Sunset at 2 mills. Four mills constitute a cascade in order to elevate the polderwater some 6 meters.
Garstenmolen – Nigtevecht – Netherlands
This inspiring pumping mill used to pump large quantities of water to a drain canal. Nowadays it’s been replaced by uninspiring electrical pumps.
