Castles are relics of the past: silent stone witnesses to a time when survival depended on strategy, strength and the thickness of your walls. Today they draw photographers and travellers from all over the world.
How I photograph castles
Winter is my season
When the trees are bare, moats, gardens and old walls show themselves in full. The low winter light rakes across the stone and gives the architecture texture and depth. Frost and mist do the rest.
Then the drone
From the ground a castle is imposing but flat. From the air you see why it stands where it stands: its village, its river, its forests. The drone tells the whole story.

Castle built from 13th century onwards. Situated along the river Vecht and open for the public
Schloss and Schlosshotel – Weilburg – Germany
Building started in 1530 in a horseshoe bend in the river Lahn. Baroque style
Castle Nijenrode – Breukelen – Netherlands
Frequently destroyed and rebuilt this version dates from the 17th century. Nowadays it houses the Nyenrode University.
Kasteel Schonauwen – Houten – Netherlands
Castle from the 13th century. Apart from the round tower demolished around 1812 for fiscal reasons. Now embedded by the village Houten.
