STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE

Watertoren Zuidergasfabriek – Amsterdam – Netherlands

This 41.5-meter water tower in Amsterdam’s Bella Vistapark was built in 1910–1911 for the Zuidergasfabriek gasworks. Constructed of red brick with natural-stone accents in eclectic neo-renaissance style, it once held reservoirs for cooling coal-gas production water. Now a national monument, it’s being transferred to Stadsherstel for restoration.

The facts

History & Purpose The Watertoren Zuidergasfabriek was built in 1910–1911 as part of the Zuidergasfabriek, a municipal gasworks complex that began operating as a distribution station in 1909 and closed in 1967. The gasworks produced coal gas from 1913 to 1963, before switching to water gas and cracked gas in its final years. The site sat along the Amstel river, with rail and river links for transporting coal.

Architecture Standing roughly 41.5–45 meters tall (sources vary slightly), the Watertoren Zuidergasfabriek was built in red brick with natural stone and yellow decorative stone accents, on a round base, likely designed by J.L. Seeuwen in an eclectic neo-renaissance style. The building’s plinth is made of Bavarian granite. It tapers upward toward a projecting ten-sided reservoir section, topped by a ten-sided lead-clad dome with a small cupola and ornamental sphere, and features four clock faces.

Function The tower contained three reservoirs, used to cool heated coal after gas extraction so it could be sold as coke fuel. The uppermost reservoir (~170 m³) held Amstel river water for the gas-extraction process, while a lower reservoir held cleaner water from the Vecht river for staff washing facilities.

Status Today Designated a national monument (rijksmonument) in 2004, the Watertoren Zuidergasfabriek is considered the only water tower in the Netherlands built specifically for a gasworks. It now sits at the center of Bella Vistapark, moved into public parkland in 2019, and is being transferred by the city to Stadsherstel Amsterdam for restoration and a new public function, likely hospitality-related.

AI analysis

Composition & Subject A striking three-quarter view of the Watertoren Zuidergasfabriek rising from parkland, with Rotterdam’s mixed skyline layered behind it — historic red-brick apartment blocks in the mid-ground, glassy high-rises further back, and the CBD towers on the left horizon. The composition works well: the tower’s vertical mass is balanced by the horizontal sweep of buildings behind it.

Sky & Light Clean, deep blue gradient with a soft contrail adding a touch of visual interest without distraction. Good call keeping this rather than replacing it — it lets the tower’s warm brick tones do the work of catching the eye.

Tower Excellent color and detail — the brick, stone banding, dark dome, and clock face all read crisply. This is clearly the intended focal point and it holds attention well.
