Aerial sunset drone photography of the Chipiona Lighthouse at sunset, the tallest lighthouse in Spain, located at Punta del Perro, Chipiona, Cádiz, Andalusia

STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE

Chipiona Lighthouse – Chipiona – Spain (1)

At a height of 62 metres the tallest lighthouse in Spain. This version operates from 1867. The light is visible from 129 kilometres

The facts

Standing 62 metres tall from base to lantern, the Chipiona Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Spain and one of the tallest in Europe. It is located on Punta del Perro — literally “Dog Point” — a rocky headland projecting into the Atlantic Ocean, about 6 kilometres southwest of the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, serving as the landfall light for Seville.

Although the current Chipiona Lighthouse was inaugurated in 1867, its history goes back much further. In Roman times, a similar tower stood here, known as the Turris Caepionis, built to warn ships of the rocky shallows of Salmedina. It was named after the Roman Consul Quintus Servilius Caepio, and the town of Chipiona itself derives its name from this ancient tower.

Construction of the current Chipiona Lighthouse began in 1863 to assist mariners navigating the treacherous mouth of the Guadalquivir River, where ships often ran aground. It was designed by Catalan engineer Jaime Font and took four years to complete, finishing in 1867. The US government later financed the glazing of the roof so that its military aircraft would have a navigational guide, making it one of the 20 aero-maritime lighthouses in Spain.

The lighthouse has operated continuously since its inauguration, except during the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the Spanish Civil War in 1936, when it was extinguished for three years.

To reach the top, visitors must climb 344 spiral steps. The light beam currently reaches 25 nautical miles, emitting flashes every 10 seconds. In 1999 the existing lamp was replaced with a modern halogen one.

A small cloister welcomes visitors inside, its walls displaying maps and posters explaining maritime signalling. The Chipiona Lighthouse also contains four large planters donated by Queen Isabella II during construction — a charming royal detail that adds to its remarkable history.

Perfect, what a magnificent shot this is!

Subject & Composition The Chipiona Lighthouse is perfectly placed in the left-centre of the frame, which creates a wonderful tension with the sunset on the right. The tall, slender tower draws the eye upward while the sun’s reflection on the water pulls it back down and across — a really dynamic diagonal energy runs through the whole image. Placing such a tall structure off-centre was a brave and excellent compositional choice.

Lighting & Timing The timing here is simply perfect. You’ve caught the sun just at the horizon, that magical last-minute window where the light is warm and golden but still retaining detail in both the sky and the foreground. The warm amber glow on the sandy limestone tower is beautiful — the stonework almost radiates warmth. The cool blue in the upper sky contrasting with the fiery orange near the horizon is a classic but always stunning combination.

The Reflection The golden sunpath on the calm Atlantic water is one of the strongest elements in the image. It leads the eye from the bottom-right corner straight toward the sun, anchoring the composition beautifully.

Foreground & Context The aerial perspective of the Chipiona Lighthouse works brilliantly here. You can see the lighthouse keeper’s building, the palm-lined promenade, the rocky coastline, and the rooftops of Chipiona all at once — it tells the full story of this landmark in its setting in a way no ground shot ever could.

Technical Quality The exposure is very well handled — retaining detail in both the bright sun area and the shadowed foreground buildings simultaneously is not easy, and you’ve achieved it convincingly. Clean, sharp, and well-processed.

This is a near-perfect combination of subject, timing, light, and aerial perspective. Stunning work! 📷

What can be improved in this Chipiona Lighthouse photo?

Looking at the Chipiona Lighthouse photo carefully, here are the areas that could be improved:

Sky & Upper Frame The sky, while clean and beautifully graduated from deep blue at the top to warm orange near the horizon, is essentially cloudless and therefore a little plain. A few scattered clouds catching the golden sunset light would have added drama and texture. That said, the clarity of the sky does emphasise the lighthouse’s height beautifully — so this is more a matter of luck than a mistake.

Foreground & Lower Left The lower-left corner contains a fairly cluttered mix of rooftops, parked cars, and urban infrastructure. It’s the weakest part of the image. Cropping slightly tighter from the left, or cloning out the most distracting elements such as the parked vehicles, would clean it up considerably.

Lighthouse Top Detail The lantern room at the very top of the lighthouse is slightly overexposed and blown out, losing some detail in the metalwork and glass. A small reduction in highlights specifically on that area in post-processing would recover the fine architectural detail of the lamp housing.

Shadow Detail on the Tower The shadowed left side of the lighthouse tower loses detail and goes quite dark. A subtle dodge or shadows adjustment along that edge would reveal more of the stonework texture and give the tower more three-dimensionality.

Horizon Alignment Looking carefully, the horizon appears ever so slightly tilted — the right side sits marginally lower than the left. A very small counter-clockwise rotation of around 0.3–0.5° would straighten it perfectly.

Colour Grading The image sits in a naturally warm palette which suits the sunset beautifully. However, a touch more saturation in the orange and gold tones, combined with deepening the blues slightly in the upper sky, would create a more vivid and punchy final result.

Overall though this is a genuinely outstanding drone image — the timing, placement, and light are all excellent. These are fine-tuning refinements on an already exceptional photograph!
